Five boats that answer most of the question.

Breakfast off the Marina, the Bosphorus at sunset, dolphins in the Atlantic, a reef day out of Hurghada and a sail down the Tagus. Five prices, five very different afternoons.

Where the fleet is

Six coastlines that keep a yacht busy all year.

A Gulf marina with its own skyline, a strait between two continents, the Pacific side of Baja, the Balearic and Canary water, the Algarve caves, and the American harbours. Each one books differently.

Mexico

Mexico has three yacht coasts and they are not the same day.

Cliffs and sea lions on the Pacific side at Cabo. Reef water and the crossing to Isla Mujeres out of Cancún. Jungle bays and a waterfall stop south of Puerto Vallarta. The boats are similar. The day is not.

The word luxury

What the word luxury is actually worth on a yacht listing.

★★★★★★★★★★4.7· 21,528 travellers aboard the most booked one

On the honest listings it buys a crewed motor yacht, a saloon out of the sun, a swim platform and someone pouring. On the rest it buys a bigger sun pad and the same two hours. The three below are the ones travellers keep going back to.

Most booked

The yachts more travellers board than any others.

Before you book

Four things a yacht listing will not tell you twice.

A boat is the one booking where the headline price can mean two entirely different things, and where an hour on the water is not an hour on the water.

  1. 01Private Premium Yacht 46FT Rental in CancúnThat price is for the boat, not for you. It carries up to fifteen, so split four ways it undercuts a seat on a dinner cruise, and booked alone it is the most expensive afternoon on this page.
  2. 02Marina Yacht Party with BBQ, Unlimited Drinks and DJUnlimited and open bar are written into the listing and they hold. Drinks on board, with drinks available, and a welcome drink all mean a bar tab instead.
  3. 03Mega Yacht ALL INCLUSIVE Yelapa Waterfall & Snorkeling AdventureA swim stop needs anchoring time. Two-hour cruises rarely have it, and the boats that do say how long the stop lasts rather than that it exists.
  4. 04Symi Yacht Tour with Unlimited Drinks and TransferRead the departure point, not the city. Half the Aegean and Algarve boats leave from a marina well outside town, and the transfer is either included or a taxi you did not budget for.
What it costs

What a day afloat actually costs.

Every trip on the site grouped by what it charges. The first three columns are a seat each. The fourth is the whole boat, where the number covers everyone who steps aboard.

Seats under $50

Two hours on a shared deck. Bosphorus sunsets, Marina loops, the Canary whale boats.

$50 to $150 a seat

Half and full days with lunch: island runs, reef stops, the sailing yachts.

$150 and up a seat

Long days, small groups, a chef aboard, and the crossings worth the flight.

Whole boat

Private charters priced for the boat, not the person. Read the guest ceiling before you compare it to anything.

Golden hour

The sunset sailing is the one that sells out.

Same boat, same route, twice the demand, and in Istanbul and Lisbon it is the departure that goes first all summer. Book it early or take the identical morning run for less.

Off the deck

Three good reasons to get off the boat and into the water.

A yacht is a platform as much as a ride. These are the trips built around what happens once the anchor is down.

Mask and fins

The snorkel stop

Reef anchorages are shallow, busy and shared with day boats, so the good operators sail to a second site once the first fills. Gear is almost always aboard and almost never the reason the price differs. What differs is how long the boat stays: twenty minutes in the water is a photograph, ninety is a snorkel trip.

Licensed distance

Whales and dolphins

Pilot whales hold station off southern Tenerife all year and bottlenose dolphins work the Atlantic shelf beside them. Licensed boats carry a yellow flag and keep a legal distance, which is why the sighting rate on the licensed ones is higher than the price suggests. The Red Sea and the Algarve run the same rules.

A hull, not a road

The island run

Phang Nga, the Pakleni islands, Isla Mujeres, Symi. Each is an hour or two by hull and awkward or impossible by road, which is the entire argument for the boat. The long versions leave before nine and hand you two islands and a lunch; the short ones circle one and sell the view.

Lunch aboard

Lunch on a yacht is a barbecue on the swim platform or a buffet below.

Forty-three listings cook on board. The Gulf boats grill on the aft deck while you swim, the Bosphorus and Seine boats serve a proper sit-down below, and a fair number of the cheap cruises mean a sandwich handed over at the jetty.
